Tongling, a major hub for China’s copper industry and sulfur-phosphate chemical production, has long been known for its industrial by-products: the black copper slag mountain, the red sulfur slag mountain, and the white phosphogypsum mountain, collectively referred to as the “Three Mountains.” Today, through measures such as controlling new waste generation, reducing existing stockpiles, recycling, and industrial utilization, Tongling’s traditional industries are undergoing a green transformation.
At Tongling Luyang Building Materials Company, visitors can see one of China’s leading facilities for green, high-value utilization of phosphogypsum through hydrothermal conversion. According to the company’s head, Zhang Shejiao, the company makes use of phosphogypsum by-products from Liuguo Chemical Company, exploring innovative methods for high-value and environmentally friendly utilization. The products are widely applied in plastic and rubber fillers, mine backfilling, and building materials. In 2024, the company processed 2.27 million tons of phosphogypsum, significantly reducing environmental pressure while turning waste into valuable resources.
Guided by circular development principles and focusing on high-end, intelligent, and green upgrades, Tongling continues to advance the green transformation of traditional manufacturing industries. The city has established a Solid Waste Management Center to support enterprises in implementing projects such as comprehensive utilization of copper anode mud, secondary nonferrous resource recovery, and production of new mine backfill cementitious materials.
These initiatives are helping enterprises develop products such as cement retarders and autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, enabling a low-carbon and circular approach for traditional industries. In terms of copper production, Tongling’s annual recovery of copper concentrate rivals that of a medium-sized copper mine, with a comprehensive copper smelting recovery rate of 99.32 percent in 2024.
Through these efforts, Tongling demonstrates how industrial innovation and resource recycling can drive sustainable, high-value development, creating a model for the green transformation of heavy industry.
