China Develops Ultrasonic Method for Testing Setting Time of Gypsum Cementitious Materials

According to Document No. 291 (2023) issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China in October 2023, the third batch of industry standards revision and foreign-language projects includes the preparation of the 2023-1561T-JC “Test Method for Setting Time of Gypsum Cementitious Materials – Ultrasonic Method”. The Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Building Materials Industry and other organizations are responsible for drafting this new industry standard.


Currently, the setting time of gypsum building materials is mainly tested using the Vicat apparatus. This traditional method requires continuous monitoring, and because the setting time of gypsum products is unstable, it often results in high labor intensity for technicians and significant human resource costs for enterprises.


The development of an automatic ultrasonic method for monitoring and determining the setting time of building gypsum and gypsum products offers substantial social and economic benefits. This new method can:
