How Does a Gypsum Board Production Line Work Step by Step?

A gypsum board production line is a highly coordinated series of equipment and processes that transform raw gypsum and paper into finished drywall panels. Step 1: Raw Material Preparation
The process starts with gypsum powder—either natural or synthetic—being delivered to storage silos. Other ingredients like water, retarders, and foam agents are also stored in designated tanks or bins. Automatic dosing systems ensure accurate proportions of each material are fed into the slurry mixer.

Step 2: Slurry Mixing
The heart of the process is the slurry preparation unit. Here, gypsum powder is mixed with water and additives to form a uniform paste. This mixture must have the right viscosity and setting characteristics to ensure proper board formation. Mixing tanks are equipped with paddles or high-shear impellers for thorough blending.

Step 3: Paper Unwinding
Simultaneously, rolls of top and bottom paper are unwound and fed onto a moving conveyor. The bottom paper runs under the slurry dispenser, while the top paper is rolled over to form a continuous sandwich structure.

Step 4: Board Forming
As the slurry is deposited onto the bottom paper, the top paper is pressed down by a forming roller. The board thickness is set at this stage by adjusting the gap between the forming table and roller. The wet board then travels along a belt conveyor to allow initial setting.

Step 5: Cutting
When the semi-set board reaches the designated length, it is cut by high-speed knives or rotary cutters. These boards are still soft enough to be handled carefully but strong enough to maintain their shape.

Step 6: Drying
The cut boards enter a multi-zone drying kiln where controlled heat removes moisture. The drying schedule is adjusted according to board thickness and composition. This stage is critical for maintaining board integrity and dimensional stability.

Step 7: Trimming and Stacking
Dried boards are then edge-trimmed to ensure precise dimensions. Final inspection checks for surface finish, uniformity, and moisture content. Boards that meet specifications are stacked, banded, and stored for distribution.

Each component of the production line works in synchronization, controlled by a centralized automation system. Operators monitor parameters like slurry feed rate, line speed, temperature zones, and moisture content to maintain optimal operation throughout the process.
